Bio
Howard M. Wachtel received his Ph.D in Economics from the Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ of Michigan following on an MA from the Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ of Connecticut and an undergraduate degree from Temple Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ. He joined the American Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ faculty in 1969. He was twice Chair of the Department of Economics and served for two years as Interim Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. He founded American Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Center for Israel Studies and was its first Director. He created AU’s Semester in Paris and directed that program for a semester in each of four years from 1994-1997.

He was an Academic Visitor at the London School of Economics and the Truman Institute at Hebrew Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ; a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the American Academy in Berlin; the Gould Visiting Scholar at the American Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ in Paris; a Fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam; and Visiting Professor at the Çà¹ÏÊÓƵ of California, Riverside.

He lectured widely in the United States and in 15 countries; was a frequent commentator in print, TV, and radio; and published four books: Workers’ Management and Workers’ Wages in Yugoslavia; Labor and the Economy; The Money Mandarins; and Street of Dreams -Boulevard of Broken Hearts.
