Dear AU Community,聽
Welcome back and happy 2025! I hope you enjoyed the snow this week. Our campus was a beautiful winter scene, and I want to thank the facilities, grounds, and public safety teams for their hard work that kept the community safe during the storm and cleanup.聽
With spring classes about to begin, there is much to look forward to this semester:聽
- The will kick off 2025 with a focus on innovation and faculty excellence in a time of change in higher education.聽
- Two important January events will further our deep commitment to civic engagement and public service. On January 18, the community will gather for the , and on January 21鈥攖he day after Inauguration Day鈥攚e will host our next Unity Meal with a focus on the spirit of service that is at the heart of AU. 聽You can for the January 21 Unity Meal.聽
- We are launching our strategic planning work with an emphasis on community and constituency engagement in the process. Throughout the fall, I heard important themes in campus discussions, including the listening tour with faculty, staff, and students. Some key topics from those conversations that will be part of our planning include building community and improving collaboration, leveraging our DC location and external partnerships, highlighting AU鈥檚 unique blend of research and teaching, building civic skills and strengthening civil discourse, furthering our commitment to inclusive excellence, and leveraging our historic and ongoing focus on public service. Stay tuned for opportunities to help shape our future roadmap. 聽
- The inaugural Civic Life student fellows will begin their campus seminars (dates to be shared soon) and the new Sine Civic Life faculty fellows will be announced soon.聽
- Our academic programs will continue building on important accolades and successes from the fall, including the Kogod School of Business being named for its leadership in integrating AI throughout the school鈥檚 curriculum.聽
Alongside our academic, civic, and social endeavors, we are also continuing our pursuit of collaborative solutions on key issues. Enrollment remains a top priority, and while indications so far look like we have a strong applicant pool, it will be critical for all of us to work throughout the spring to secure the incoming class of undergraduate and graduate students. A big thanks to our enrollment teams who worked during winter break to meet important January deadlines. We also continue to develop the FY26 budget and align resources to our changing needs and the new reality of higher education. I am grateful to the finance and HR teams who are engaged across the campus as we craft FY26 budget proposals, address community questions, and advance key initiatives.聽
As we continue to explore and implement solutions with a community-based approach built on shared governance and transparency, there naturally will be questions and differing perspectives. We can effectively navigate challenging topics by putting trust, shared goals, and good faith efforts at the center of our discourse. Our conversations about hard topics can thoughtfully consider different points of view without becoming personal attacks. Disagreements about university matters should never compromise the personal well-being of any member of the community, which unfortunately has occurred at times in the past. I believe we all can embrace these principles, model the kind of civil discourse we are striving to teach our students, and together chart the best path forward for our community and this institution that are so important to us all. 聽
Finally, I want to extend our heartfelt care and concern for all members of our community impacted by the terrible wildfires that have devastated the Los Angeles area. Our own daughter lives in Los Angeles and evacuated from her apartment, so we have been following this unfolding tragedy very closely. In the days to come, I know that we will find ways to support and uplift our friends, classmates, and colleagues who have suffered loss during this difficult time.聽
As we look ahead, this semester is filled with opportunities. I am excited about our possibilities, and I hope you are as well. Thank you for all you do for American 青瓜视频. Good luck with all your pursuits, and go Eagles!聽
