The Bishop John Fletcher Hurst Philosophy Lecture, offered annually in the spring, brings some of the most distinguished thinkers who are working on the frontiers of contemporary thought, and who are relevant to many disciplines.
The Bishop John Fletcher Hurst Philosophy Lecture was initiated by the Department of Philosophy and Religion and named for the founder of American 青瓜视频, who was himself a philosopher. Offered annually in the spring, it brings to the American 青瓜视频 campus some of the most distinguished thinkers from this country and abroad. As a result, our students have immediate contact with those shaping philosophical theory in many fields. The department has consistently invited lecturers who are working on the frontiers of contemporary thought and who are relevant to many other disciplines, including aesthetics, the social and natural sciences, history, literature, ethics and the philosophy of religion.
The 65th Annual Hurst Lecture, 2024: "Imperial Museums"
Speaker: Linda Mart铆n Alcoff (Hunter College)
Thursday, April 18, 2024
The primary way museums legitimate their right to maintain ownership of their collections has been on the basis of protecting a universal cultural knowledge which has unlimited reach into the future and an unbounded significance for all publics. I will explore and analyze the debates over this claim. My focus here will be primarily on archaeological museums that house cultural artifacts from many cultures. I will argue that there is a form of extractivist epistemology at work in the construction of these types of museums, in their epistemic practices, and that this has a negative effect on many publics, including those in the global north.
Speaker: Linda Mart铆n Alcoff is Professor of Philosophy at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, CUNY.聽She is a past President of the American Philosophical Association, Co-Director of SPEP, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and, in 2021, she was listed as the third most influential philosopher by Academic Influence based on citations. Her books include: Rape and Resistance: Understanding the Complexities of Sexual Violation (2018); The Future of Whiteness (2015); Visible Identities: Race, Gender and the Self (2006), which won the Frantz Fanon Award for 2009; and Real Knowing: New versions of the Coherence Theory (1996). She has also edited or co-edited 11 books in critical race theory, feminist philosophy, epistemology, and Latin American philosophy. She Co-Directs the Hunter College Public Humanities Program, and regularly writes for newspapers and magazines. She has taught decolonial philosophy in Europe, Australia, Africa, and South America. She is originally from Panama.
Intersections of Resistance
Watch the 2024 Bishop Hurst Graduate Panel, Intersections of Resistance: Postcolonial Perspectives on Gender, Culture, and Identity
This panel explores diverse perspectives on identity, resistance, and empowerment through a decolonial lens. It addresses challenges faced by women in patriarchal societies, celebrates the dynamic nature of Latin American identity, and examines how marginalized communities reclaim agency through cultural expression. Through these insights, it prompts reflection on power dynamics and cultural identity in an evolving world. In conclusion, this panel invites audiences to embark on a thought-provoking journey, urging reflection on the intricate interplay between power dynamics, cultural expression, and the eternal quest for identity through a postcolonial perspective in an ever-evolving world.
